Reimagined Science Center

Wellesley is in the midst of the most ambitious project in our modern history: transforming our Science Complex into an integrated, sustainable, state-of-the-art facility.The reimagined Science Complex will be an inviting, inclusive hub of integrated, flexible instruction and research, continuing Wellesley’s leadership at the forefront of STEM education for women.

This new complex will not only enhance the College’s ability to attract exceptional faculty and students to Wellesley, it will also draw current students from across campus to Science Hill to connect across disciplines and delve into the great mysteries of the world.

Through the use of light, space, and vistas—with views outside to engage with nature and inside to see science in action—the Science Complex will be a place for collaborative and creative experimentation, research, and learning.

Philanthropic support will help ensure that our faculty have access to the resources and facilities they need to advance their innovation in pedagogy and research. It will also give students the opportunity to draw from the sciences in ways that strengthen Wellesley’s liberal arts tradition.

Science at Wellesley

• Wellesley students graduating with a STEM major increased 10% in the last 10 years.
• Wellesley ranks highest among liberal arts colleges, and in the top 50 among all U.S. institutions, in the number of women graduates who go on to earn Ph.D.s in the sciences.
• Wellesley students and alumnae have a 72% acceptance rate to medical school. The national average is 42%.
• Five of Wellesley's seven most popular majors are in STEM.
• Among current faculty, 37 have active grants, including 29 federally funded grants. In fact, Wellesley faculty receive the largest amount of federal grant funding compared to our liberal arts peer institutions.

Pamela Melroy ’83 is a former NASA astronaut who served as pilot on space shuttle missions STS-92 and STS-112 and commanded mission STS-120. President Biden has appointed her to be the next deputy administrator at NASA, and she will be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in November 2021, in a ceremony that was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
