Saint Andrew’s Society of New York Graduate Scholarship (rising seniors)

In recognition of the benefits of higher education, the Saint Andrew’s Society provides a scholarship of $35,000 for three American students of Scottish heritage to study in Scotland for a year after college graduation.

Eligibility

Who is eligible?

  • Senior undergraduate students who will obtain a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the Spring of the academic year of application;
  • Students of at least some Scottish descent;
  • Students who demonstrate financial need;
  • Those who reside or attend school within 250 miles of New York State; and
  • U.S. citizens

What makes a strong applicant for this fellowship?

  • Strong academic achievement and extracurricular activities; and
  • The ability clearly to explain personal objectives, as well as why studying in Scotland is important to the applicant.
  • (Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously studied in the United Kingdom.)

How do I apply?

All Wellesley College applicants for the Saint Andrew’s Society of New York Scholarship must first apply for Wellesley’s nomination. A Wellesley College faculty committee will review applications and nominate one candidate whose final application will be sent to the Saint Andrew’s Society of New York by the December 14th annual official deadline.

☐ unofficial copies of any applicable transcripts, including your Wellesley unofficial grade reports, and any applicable transfer or study abroad transcripts
☐ proof of financial need (typically a copy of your most recent financial aid award letter)
Wellesley Fellowships office signature document(please print, sign & date this form, then submit a scanned pdf or other image of the signed document along with your application materials)

*Please note that nominee will also need to apply separately to the graduate degree course of choice in Scotland: why not apply for the degree course you really hope to do, and also for as many scholarships as you can to help you get there?

Application timeline

October to mid-November
Interested students should read about the scholarship, explore graduate study options, talk with academic and professional mentors, and may make an appointment via Handshake to discuss their application plans with Kate Dailinger. Once you've found the right degree course, make sure you know what the application deadline for the course is and what you'll need to apply; application for the degree program is separate from applying for this scholarship.

Late November-early December
Shortlisted candidates are invited to interview with the campus committee. Wellesley’s nominee will have a chance to finalize her application with advice from the campus committee.

December 14, annually
Deadline for receipt in New York of the nominated application.

February or early March
It is the St Andrew’s Society scholarship committee's usual practice to invite six (6) finalists to a luncheon in New York City during February or early March. Following this meeting, three (3) of these finalists will be awarded a scholarship for graduate study in Scotland.
